Géant Casino (French pronunciation: [ʒeɑ̃ kɑzino]) is a hypermarket chain based in Saint-Étienne, France, part of the French retailing giant Groupe Casino.
As of February 2016, it had 120 stores in France.[1]
History[edit]
Géant was opened its first hypermarket in 1970. In Dec 2015, Géant Casino had about 142 hypermarkets all over the world. The concept is, like most hypermarkets, to have all kinds of items available under one roof. A loyalty card system has been introduced by Géant, with a price discount on certain groceries. There are over two million Géant card-holders.
Géant Casino is the fifth largest hypermarket chain in the world and the fourth largest in France after Carrefour, E.Leclerc and Auchan.[citation needed]

Operations in the Middle East[edit]
Kuwait, Bahrain and UAE[edit]
Fu-Com joined with Groupe Casino to bring the Géant hypermarket brand to the Middle East where Géant opened its first store in Bahrain in May 2001. A store was opened in Dubai in 2005 and one in Abu Dhabi in 2015 at Yas Mall. Géant expanded its operations to Kuwait by opening a store in 2005 in Kuwait City.
Acquisition by Majid Al Futtaim Group
In 2017, Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim Group bought 26 Geant hypermarkets in the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait by acquiring the Geant franchise owner Retail Arabia from BMA International for an undisclosed amount. The acquired stores were rebranded as Carrefour and Carrefour Market depending on their store format or size.
Qatar[edit]
In Qatar, Groupe Casino joined with local supermarket chain Al Meera to open a hypermarket in Hyatt Plaza, and to sell Casino products in Al Meera stores.
Countries where Géant is currently not operating[edit]
- Lebanon: Géant had one hypermarket in Lebanon which was bought in late 2008 by Sultan Trading Center and replaced by The Sultan Center.
- Poland: Géant had nineteen hypermarkets in Poland, which were sold in late 2007 and early 2008 to the German company Metro AG and replaced with Real.[2][3]

Three frugal Toronto events for the June 13-15 weekend are the Art Crawl in Liberty Village, the Taste of Little Italy and the Halal Food Festival of Toronto. This article offers a brief look at these three annual Toronto events, and provides links to their official web pages further down this page.
(Added June 14, 2014): How did I miss the Fathers’ Day Beach BBQ and Brews festival at Woodbine Park this whole weekend? It runs Friday afternoon through early Sunday evening. (Let me admit why I omitted this: a report that the city would no longer allow trucks to park on grassland; this would cancel many events such as BBQ & Brews. Having run past the park tonight, I can vouch it was busy with tents and music). Scroll down the page for the link to their official site for more details.

The Liberty Village Art Crawl 2014
“Toronto Art Crawl” is the umbrella from which three “art crawls” will emerge:
- Liberty Village Art Crawl on June 13-14, 2014, in two locations in the Liberty Village area.
- Entertainment District Art Crawl on July 11 and August 8, centred on David Pecault Square (approximately bounded by King, John, Wellington and Simcoe streets).
- City Place Art Crawl on July 5 and September 27, in the Canoe Landing Park (Fort York Blvd, Don Leckie Way, Lakeshore Blvd, and Brunel Court… if you can find Brunel Court on a map)!
The Liberty Village Art Crawl actually uses a different location each day, to showcase 35 artists and artisans.
On Friday the 13th, head to Liberty Street (between Fraser and Jefferson) from 11am-6pm. That’s the street south of Lamport Stadium.
(One web page mentions “Linear Park”, which seems misleading. Northern Linear Park is perpendicular to Spadina Ave. and south of both Front St. and the railway tracks; Southern Linear Park runs east from Spadina, just north of Lake Shore Blvd. The organizer, Nadia Lloyd, just replied to confirm the Liberty Street venue for Friday).
On Saturday June 14, go to Liberty Village Park at Lynn Williams, East Liberty and Pirandello from 11am-7pm.
The 2014 Taste of Little Italy in Toronto
The dates for the Toronto Taste of Little Italy are Friday-Sunday, June 13-15, 2014. The location is College St., bounded by Shaw and Bathurst.
This annual Toronto event features Italian cuisine and culture. It’s free to attend, but of course you will pay a bit for the foods you taste.
Fifty restaurants offer patio dining; the Festival of Art and Design (FRESCO) shines a spotlight on emerging visual artists (at College & Palmerston); and live bands perform at a variety of venues.
Since College St. will be closed for this street festival, you’d be well advised to take the 506 College streetcar. I’d be tempted to walk south from the Ossington or Bathurst stations on the #2 (Bloor/Danforth) subway.
The 2014 Halal Food Fest of Toronto
Surprisingly, the Halal Food Fest of Toronto actually takes place in the International Centre at 6900 Airport Rd., in Mississauga. It runs from Sat. June 14 from 10am-10pm; or Sun. June 15 from 10am-8pm.
Clearly the emphasis is on halal cuisine, but any food lover could learn from this festival. Events include cheese tasting and “how to grill” steak or ribs, in addition to “challenges of eating halal”. Further afield, “healing with honey” and a tae kwon do demonstration push the boundaries of what I would expect from a halal food festival.
General admission tickets to the Halal Food Fest of Toronto cost $5. Buy them online through their web page (“Tickets”, then “View Cart”).
The International Centre is served by Mississauga Transit. Its web site includes directions for drivers. The TTC recommends taking either the 89 Weston bus towards Albion Road, or the 52B Lawrence West bus towards Westwood. Expect to pay an extra fare for the TTC to take you right to the International Centre.
The Official Web Pages for these Annual Summer Events in Toronto
The main page for the Toronto Art Crawl links to each of the locations, and to more information about the specific features at each venue.
The home page for the Taste of Little Italy in Toronto pops up a snippet of information when you click on the menu topic.
The Halal Food Fest of Toronto site is also easy to navigate and use. I found the “Festival Info … Meet the Chefs” section to be fascinating, but could not do justice in a summary on this page. By the way, here’s the home page for the International Centre. Click “Are You Visiting” and then a link to “Get Directions” for help getting there.
(Added June 14, 2014): Here is the official Beach BBQ and Brews web site.
Looking for More Annual Events or a Holiday in Toronto Canada?
My blog notes many annual events for vacations in Toronto Ontario; or for local residents wanting things to do in Toronto this weekend. It tracks all the annual Toronto events that I find interesting, and provides ideas for fascinating, free or frugal things to do in Toronto. I especially like to cover summer attractions and special events in Toronto Canada; but especially for Canadian holidays.
